Kavanaugh hearings will shine light on his judicial philosophy, for those willing to listen

August 10, 2018

The following is the statement of Committee for Justice president Curt Levey on the scheduling of the hearings for Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh beginning September 4:

Washington, D.C. — The Committee for Justice commends Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley for scheduling a hearing date for Judge Kavanaugh that will allow him to be voted on by the full Senate in time for him to join the Supreme Court when it begins its new term October 1.

Faced with Senate Democrats' unreasonable request for millions of pages of documents, a demand that would delay the hearing and force the Supreme Court to begin its term without a full bench, Sen. Grassley found a fair compromise that will provide the committee with a record volume of documents, including all genuinely relevant ones, without unduly delaying the hearing.

The hearing will likely last four days, with the focus on Judge Kavanaugh's opening statement and the exchanges between him and Judiciary Committee members. We encourage those members to ask Kavanaugh questions which will shine light on his judicial philosophy, rather than asking him how we will rule on specific cases or issues—questions he cannot responsibly answer.

What is certain about the hearing, given Judge Kavanaugh's outstanding qualifications and intellect, is that he will make a great impression on both the American people and the members of the committee—at least those willing to listen.

As a result, we fully expect him to be confirmed by the end of September
