CFJ Welcomes Choice of Fred Fielding as WH Counsel
Fielding Will Stand Up to Democrats on Judges Issue
WASHINGTON, DC - The Committee for Justice (CFJ), which promotes constitutionalist judicial nominees and the rule of law, today reacted to the news that Fred Fielding will be named as the new White House counsel. "The choice of Fred Fielding to head the office at the heart of the judicial nomination process is good news for those of us who care deeply about the nomination and confirmation of constitutionalist judges," said CFJ executive director Curt Levey.
Levey noted that "with the Democrats now in control of the Senate, we can expect them to step up their obstruction of President Bush's judicial nominees. Given the inevitability of Senate Democrats using requests for privileged documents as a delaying tactic and attempting to encroach on the President's constitutional nominating authority, it was particularly important that the President choose a counsel who has the gravitas and determination to stand up to the Democrats' antics on judges. In that regard, the President hit a home run with his choice of Fielding. As a seasoned veteran of Washington's political wars and a man widely respected on both sides of the aisle, Fielding is ideally suited to working with the Senate in a fair but resolute manner."
Levey added that he is "confident that Fielding shares the President's strong commitment to putting solid constitutionalists on the federal courts. Fielding undoubtedly understands that this requires that all of the President's judicial nominees have a strong devotion to the rule of law, such that Democratic senators know that there's no point in obstructing constitutionalist nominees in hopes of getting ones that are less objectionable to the Left. Fielding's appointment goes a long way towards sending exactly that signal to Senate Democrats."
